Liam's Bench
A small 2-seater bench for a private garden in South Devon. Nearly all the components were cleaved from a single pole of sweet chestnut. The seat slab is also sweet chestnut, from a tree which fell during the Great Storm of October 1987, keeping in line with our sustainable approach to furniture creations. The giant chestnut was planked up shortly after the storm, and has lain undisturbed in a barn locally for over 30 years. The dramatic colour change is due to honey fungus which had infected the tree, possibly weakening it and making it more vulnerable to the wind. This style of green woodworking - (using the wiggly bits) is known as “free-form” green woodwork. I have been using my fondness for making jigs (workshop aids) to push the boundaries of this kind of work, enabling me to accurately angle the mortice holes even without any straight lines to work or measure from.
