Around the Workshop
I am blessed with a very lovely workshop in the heart of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is the South Hams coastline in Devon, in the South West of England.
There is loads do do nearby - here are a few places of interest nearby to the Devon Green Wood Centre.
The view of the workshop setting from Burgh Island, a great place to visit during your stay.
The area is well-served with good local pubs serving food, stunning beaches, and a couple of very pretty villages nearby.
Holbeton is to the east of the workshop, and has a wonderful village post office and shop which serves good local produce, and all the basics. If you give Jack a call in advance may be able to whip up a sandwich for lunch for you.
To the west are Newton Ferrers, and Noss Mayo - two adjacent picturesque villages either side of the Yealm Estuary. Newton has a good selection of shops, including a deli and a lovely cafe, The Green
If you are coming from the Plymouth direction and need to buy lunch, Ben’s Farm Shop offers all things organic, including local veg, pies, salads, good chocolate - all the essentials. https://bensfarmshop.co.uk
Further to the east is Modbury, a thriving town which boasts being the first town in the UK to go plastic bag-free.
Local pubs include the Mildmay Colours in Holbeton https://www.mildmaycolours.co.uk , or the Ship https://www.theshipinn-nossmayo.co.uk and the Dolphin Inn in Newton Ferrers.https://dolphininn.weebly.com
There is a fabulous ice-cream place very close to the workshop - the award-winning Surfing Cow, who make all their ice-creams on site from their herd of Jersey-Cross cows.
Our most local beach is Wadham rocks, around 15 minutes walk from the workshop. Stoke Beach is a beautiful sandy cove a little further along the coast, and Mothecombe - the busiest and most popular beach in the area - has parking and an easy path leading to a beautiful cove nestled in the Erme Valley. Adjacent to the paying carpark at Mothecombe is the wonderful School House Devon, which has upgraded from when I was a child when all you could get was a sausage roll and a Mars Bar. These days it has a fabulous Mediterranean inspired menu, chilled outdoor space, and a calendar of events throughout the year.
