Carve your own Shrinkpot with Alex Finnberg

Shrink pots are the ultimate green wood project. There is a certain magic to using natural shrinkage to make a beautiful and functional wooden pot. Hollowing out a small trunk of a tree whilst its still 'green' and full of sappy water, a hardwood base can be popped into the base, and as the pot slowly dries, it shrinks around the base creating a very tight seal and a beautiful pot. Shrink pots are endlessly practical, fill them with tea, coffee, kitchen utensils, knives, spoons, or make a small lidded pot for your treasured jewels. This workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced woodworkers, no previous woodworking experience necessary. We use simple tools, hand saws, gouges, mallets and spoon knives to hollow out and shape our pots. We'll focus on carving techniques that will allow you to carve safely, so you can go away with the confidence and wherewithal to continue to churn out shrink pots at home! There will be the opportunity to buy all the necessary dedicated gouges and tools at discounted prices on the day itself. This course makes for a really fun and creative day, the process of carving out a log into a beautiful pot is deeply satisfying. Please bring sturdy footwear and warm clothing suitable for the outdoors and a packed lunch. Ample tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Please arrive promptly for a 9am start.
